When the Bees Fly Home by Andrea Cheng is the story of Jonathan, the young son of a beekeeper.
Jonathan isn’t quite strong enough yet to help his father with all the work on the family's farm. Sometimes his dad gets impatient with him, while the family struggles to make ends meet during a drought, and the bees aren’t making much honey.
When Jonathan’s mother stays up late one night to make beeswax candles to sell at the local farmer’s market, Jonathan comes downstairs to help.
He gets to work modeling small beeswax animals and bugs with which to decorate the candles. His candles prove so popular that Jonathan and his mom come home from the market with orders for many more!
This is a lovely story for children 4-7 that reminds us that boys have gifts besides strength and athletic ability, and that there is a special place in the world for artistic and sensitive boys.
